The History of GM - General Motors

The history of GM, the world's largest automaker, saw its beginning in 1908. The company was founded by William Durant in the year 1902. The shrewd businessman that he was, Durant realized that the future lay with cars and not carriages. Initially, the company was founded as a holding company for Buick. The latter part of the year saw the company acquiring Oldsmobile, followed by the possession of Cadillac, Oakland and Elmore in the very next year.

Many of the motor companies were in dire straits during the difficult years of the early 1900's. The stock market panic in 1907 put a lot of small companies into financial distress. Many of these companies were running on credit from various bankers. This was a golden opportunity for Durant, who proceeded to buy smaller car builders, and companies that built car parts as well as car accessories. In 1908, these various companies were folded into a single unit, thus creating the new GM entity. This marked the exciting beginning of the true history of GM.

William Durant was a flamboyant businessman whose curious mix of genius and over-reaching took GM both to its heights as well as plunged it into financial distress. In 1910, bankers were forced to step in to prevent financial collapse of GM, and Durant was removed from the company he had founded. But by 1911, the company had made enough advances into the international market that the General Motors Export Company was established to handle sales outside the U.S and Canada.

Durant managed to use another company he formed, Chevrolet, to come back to power in GM during 1915, and the history of GM from 1915-1920 is full of successes. During this time, the Cadillac became wildly successful. In 1918, GM bought the operating assets of Chevrolet Motors. But, soon America was hit by a power recession and in 1920, Durant again found himself out of the company.

During the financial boom in the 1920's, the history of GM virtually glowed with success. Auto sales reached the 4.5 million mark, and the auto industry now had three giants - GM, Ford and Chrysler. GM now had a brilliant engineer turned industrialist at its helm. Alfred Sloan who was later acclaimed for his marketing genius had slowly worked his way up among the ranks of GM. His marketing genius breathed a fresh lease of life into GM that was beginning to get overshadowed by Ford.

Ford's philosophy of giving the public the best value for their money offered little variety. But Sloan and GM were interested in providing the public with more than a black box. Stylish colors, features and comfort became the new motto of the company. GM also made a path-breaking offer - the public could now buy a car on credit. The five brands of GM - Pontiac, Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile and Chevrolet began changing every year with the focus being directed mainly at looks and style. This strategy paid rich dividends. Ford was pushed to the backseat again by GM.

The great Wall Street crash in 1929 put an abrupt stop to all expansion plans at GM for the time being. Stocks of GM fell rather badly. But, by early 1930's GM bounced back and bought the Yellow Coach bus company. In 1930, GM bought Electro-Motive Corporation, the internal combustion engine railcar builder. The next 20 years saw GM powered diesel locomotives running on American railroads. December 31, 1955 is another landmark in the history of GM. GM became the first company to make more than a billion dollars in a year.

There was a time in the History of GM when it was the largest corporation in the US. The history of GM also shows that there was a time when GM was the single largest employer in the world. But, in recent times GM has been beset with financial woes. November 2005 saw GM booking a billion loss and about 30,000 employees were laid off. 12 plants were closed down.

Amazing Discovery - Baking Soda Cures Cancer

My stepfather and uncle died of cancer. My best friend also died of cancer. I have lots of reasons not to like cancer so I made up my mind to look for alternatives, to help others who may be in a bad way from cancer to find a solution.

You too may be looking for answers. Cancer is a devastating disease that not only kills its victims, but also tears apart their friends and loved ones. The frustration dealing with doctors who give you little hope and treatments that are often worse than the disease itself is almost too much to take.

Well I have spent years looking for answers as I watched my friends and family members pass away from this awful disease. I admit I am just a regular guy and I may not recognize as much as a doctor, but I can also tell you that I am here to get to the truth and I think I have discovered it through two amazing doctors.

Dr. Timothy Brantley and Dr. T. Simoncini have discovered ways to help their patients beat cancer. And I think their solutions are powerful and should be shouted from the rooftops of every building. They are not miracle workers, just practitioners in search of the truth and looking to provide you answers. It all starts with understanding what causes cancer and what you can do to prevent it.

What Causes Cancer?

Cancer is the mystery disease. Billions have been spent to try to find a cure, yet you never hear anyone clearly specify what causes it. Sure we hear about certain bad habits like smoking or too much sun that may make you more vulnerable to getting cancer, but you never hear how you can get it in the first place.

Unfortunately, I have known far too many people who have contracted Cancer and have died. And despite modern medicines attempt with drugs (chemotherapy) or radiation (isn't that one of the causes?) most of the people using these traditional treatments lose their battle with cancer. In fact all I have seen from these types of treatments is quick deterioration in the patients health, plus they feel awful everyday from the treatment itself. In fact on Dr. Simoncini web site shows the fact that nearly all doctors themselves would not utilize the treatments they often prescribe:

"The great lack of trust is evident even amongst doctors. Polls and questionnaires show that three doctors out of four (75 percent) would refuse any chemotherapy because of its ineffectiveness against the disease and its devastating effects on the entire human organism. This is what many doctors and scientists have to say about chemotherapy:"

"The majority of the cancer patients in this country die because of chemotherapy, which does not cure breast, colon or lung cancer. This has been documented for over a decade and nevertheless doctors still utilize chemotherapy to fight these tumors." (Allen Levin, MD, UCSF, "The Healing of Cancer", Marcus Books, 1990)."

But recently, I have been hearing more and more about those that are living and beating cancer everyday. And the one thing I have learned through my research is that you have to beat cancer "everyday", because there really is no quick fix.

Two doctors who I think may have answers is Dr. Timothy Brantley and Dr Tullio Simoncini.

Dr. Brantley is a popular naturopathic herb doctor that I first saw on Rachael Ray show and later the Montel Williams show who teaches people that "You Are The Cause and You Are The Cure". In his book titled "The Cure Heal Your Body, Save Your Life" lays out the fundamentals on how he helped several people cure themselves of cancer by balancing their internal systems using a proper diet and aggressive detoxification. This process saved hundreds of his patients suffering numerous ailments. And he has helped celebrities like Sylvester Stallone, Kelsey Grammar and other famous people with their health issues.

The keys to balancing your system as established through Dr. Brantley's book is to remove the toxins that are trapped in your body and simultaneously stop adding more toxins. These toxins are made up of free radicals that wreak havoc on your body. Dr. Brantley says that all of the answers are in nature and if you focus on feeding your body foods from the earth then you can cure yourself of almost any disease. In addition, he offers herbal formulas that can help to remove years of built-up of toxins trapped in the vital organs of your body. And he writes that Cancer cannot live in a balanced body and I have seen his patients on the Montel William show who have claimed that they are now cancer free because of what Dr. Brantley has taught them.

If you want to find out "how toxic you are", Dr. Brantley offers a free health evaluation or join as a member to get access to his healthy recipes and other health reports he provides via his web site. And unlike most web sites with answers he gives all of this information without asking for any a penny.

On the other side of the spectrum is Dr. T. Simoncini a trained Medical Doctor specializing in Oncology (a cancer specialist). He is confident that Cancer is a fungus that can be treated and cured. The most surprising fact is that the treatment is using sodium bicarbonate a substance we know better as baking soda. Yes, I said baking soda like the one Arm N Hammer produces. Through his practice in Rome, Italy, Dr. Simoncini uses sodium bicarbonate directly where the tumor resides in the body. He hypothesized that tumors shared many of the same properties of a fungus; and since sodium bicarbonate was known to be a quick and powerful weapon capable of eliminating fungus he might be able to use it to combat the tumor. And it did as Dr. Simoncini explains "I thought that if I could administer high concentrations orally or intravenously I might be able to obtain the same result. So I started my tests and my experiments, which provided me immediately with tangible results."

These discoveries lead to equally burning questions that need to be asked: If something as simple as baking soda can reduce and eliminate tumors and changing your diet can eliminate and reduce cancer and tumors, why has the medical community not mobilized around these solutions? And why are we not shouting and lauding these discoveries in major forums where cancer is discussed?

The answer to these questions are not clear. Although you do not need to look far as who benefits from Cancer being treated in its current prescribed manner. According to the National Cancer Institute, cancer patients are going to cost Medicare alone billion for 5 years of care of 700,000 people. This is BIG BUSINESS folks. Don't let anyone tell you anything different. Pharmaceutical companies, MRI companies, doctors and hospitals would be crippled if all of these patients suddenly went away. Many doctors do not want to challenge these businesses who profit from cancer patients and in turn help fund the doctor's living.

If this is why these alternative cancer treatments have not been tested on a larger scale then it is a shame. However, you don't have to give up hope if you or a loved one has cancer. There is a cure for cancer and you do not need miracles. I pray you find this article and pass it along to as many people as you can, because you can save a life. Is your chainsaw starting to seem dull and not perform as well? Looks like it's time to replace the chain. In order to do this, you will need to know the length of both the chainsaw blade as well as the length and size of your chain. If you've checked out the manufacturers' charts, they might seem a little overwhelming. But it really is pretty simple once you understand what's involved in the length of the blade and chainsaw chain.

When you're ready to replace your chain, the first thing to do is determine the size of your chainsaw bar. If you happen to have an Oregon chainsaw, this should be easy. Just check the first two numbers of the ten-digit model number that is stamped on the motor end of the blade. That's your chainsaw bar length.

What's The Best Way To Measure A Chain Saw Blade?

To measure the chainsaw blade itself is simple enough to do. Just put your measuring tape at the end of the bar up against the casing and measure straight down the bar all the way to the tip of the blade.

Blade and bar are two terms that are both used to indicate the same item. This is the blade that extends from the casing of the motor and carries the chain which is what does the sawing for you.

Manufacturers were kind enough to standardize the chainsaw blade lengths into two-inch increments. The most common sizes are 16, 18, and 20 inches although the full range goes from 10 to 42 inches! When you measure your blade, round up to the nearest 2-inch measurement if needed.

Measuring A Chainsaw Chain

To measure the chain on your chainsaw, there are two things you will need to know ... the number of drive links and the pitch of the chain.

A drive link is simply a tooth on the chain and your chain's length is determined by the number of drive links (or teeth). The pitch of the chain also affects the size of the drive links.

The pitch of the chain is important to know as it must match the pitch of both the drive sprocket as well as the bar nose sprocket. This should be stamped on the drive link but if you need to measure the pitch yourself, take the distance between any 3 rivets of the chain and divide by 2.

As an example, a 1/4" pitch chain might have 52 drive links and be 2.17 feet in length, while a 3/8" pitch with 52 drive links would be 3.18 feet in length. So the pitch affects the drive link size which affects your blade's length.

Still unsure? Just check with your chain saw's manufacturer or anyone who makes chains and they will be able to clear up any confusion you may have.

There are many models of chainsaws available to select from the marketplace. What might make your particular selection the right choice for you could be determined by your chain saws intended use. The Blessed Damozel by Dante Gabriel Rossetti - An Analysis of the Pictorial Qualities of the Poem

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828--1882) was a poet and painter, and a leading spirit in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which was an attempt to bring the Romantic spirit into a realm of art still dominated by a decadent classicism. This second Romanticism he applied to poetry, highlighting the sensuous touches which had been the hallmark of Keats. Rossetti, combined spiritual vision with sensuality very deftly.

The peculiarity of this "Fleshly School of Poetry" is the effect gained by close attention to detail. In spite of his being too much of a Victorian with preoccupations with intellectual and moral considerations, the result of Pre-Raphaelitism was the down pedaling of the moral element. Aestheticism of Oscar Wilde was the child of Pre-Raphaelitism.

The atmosphere of the poem featured here is one of the 'religiosity' than that of religion. The influence of Keats is apparent everywhere. The poem can be compared with some Pre-Raphaelite paintings to a good advantage of the reader.

Let me present to you the text of the poem before I say a few words about the pictorial quality of the same.

The blessed damozel leaned out (Ah sweet! Even now, in that bird's song,

From the gold bar of Heaven; Strove not her accents there,

Her eyes were deeper than the depth Fain to be hearkened? When those bells

She had three lilies in her hand, Strove not her steps to reach my side

And the stars in her hair were seven. Down all the echoing stair?)

Her robe, ungirt from clasp to hem, "I wish that he were come to me,

No wrought flowers did adorn, For he will come," she said,

But a white rose of Mary's gift, "Have I not prayed in Heaven?--on earth,

And still she bowed herself and stooped "We two," she said, "will seek the groves

Out of the circling charm; Where the lady Mary is,

From the fixed place of Heaven she saw "Circlewise sit they, with bound locks

Time like a pulse shake fierce And foreheads garlanded;

Through all the worlds. Her gaze still strove Into the fine cloth like flame

Within the gulf to pierce Weaving the golden thread,

Its path; and now she spoke as when To fashion the birth-robes for them

The stars sang in their spheres. Who are just born, being dead.

The sun was gone now; the curled moon

The power of picture painting came to Dante Gabriel Rossetti naturally as he was not only a poet but also a painter. His poem has rightly been compared with Pre-Raphaelite paintings. Throughout, Rossetti has painted pictures after pictures with words instead of a brush and has lent to his art vivid colors balanced in an impeccable manner

He was the leading poet who brought the romantic spirits into a realm of art giving adept, sensuous touches to the same. He combined spirituality with sensuality and his poetic imagery has the same definiteness of color and form as his paintings. The master artist as he was, he eminently succeeded in conveying an intense mystical and spiritual impression through the very precision of his images.

This is one of the finest and best known of Rossetti's poems in which pictorial imagination, rich language, a wealth of concrete detail, mystic medieval atmosphere and tender passions have all been created and painted not with the master strokes of a painter's brush but with precise and magical words.

An estranged lover (The Blessed Damozel) in Heaven longs to be united with her lover who is not yet dead. She fervently hopes that God shall grant her wish that her lover's soul should join her in heaven after he dies. Hence, she stands at the ramparts of heaven looking towards the earth below and longing for her lover's soul to float up to join to her.

Let us now consider Rossetti's power of rendering myriad images in his poem. For example, in stanza one, Heaven is pictured as a castle high above and beyond the system of the world. The way Rossetti has described the periphery of Heaven is also quiet picturesque. The phrase 'Goldbar' is such an imagery very effectively describing the golden barrier which surrounds Heaven. In stanza two, the poet has described Virgin Mary's hair, saying that it is yellow like the color of ripe corn and the comparison stimulates our senses like a beautiful painting. In stanza four, when Rossetti describes to us the mental state of the estranged lover on the earth, he does so very strikingly. His choice of words makes us see the whole romantic scene happening, as it were, in front of our eyes.

"Surely she leaned o'er me - her hair

Fell all about my face . ... ... ... ...

Nothing: the autumn-fall of leaves."

In stanza nine, the poet's words captivate us by its power of creating mysterious images in our mind.

"From the fixed place of Heaven she saw

Time like a pulse shake fierce

Through all the worlds. .."

As we read the above lines, time appears to be throbbing like a feverish pulse in the body of the universe.

The rich and graphic description of the Virgin Mary and her five attendants in the groves is striking; they are weaving the golden threads into a flame like white cloth to make the birth-robes for those who are just born into a new life in Heaven. The painter-poet has used the word 'White' with great significance in the sense that this color has lent an eternal milieu to the entire poem.
