Chain Saw Sharpener Tools

Getting chores done around your yard or summer cabin can be much easier with the help of a chain saw. But, that's only true if you keep the chainsaw sharp. A dull chain saw not only slows down the work, but can be a very dangerous tool.

Saws Tools

There are a number of different chain saw sharpeners on the market that will automatically sharpen the chain. Professional quality bench sharpeners, enthusiast level chain sharpeners, and handyman sharpeners. Each of these has their advantages and disadvantages, including price, portability, ease of use, and accuracy.

Saws Tools

Professional and enthusiast grinders sharpen the chain when it is off the saw. Guides hold the chain in perfect position while adjustments to edge angle and tilt angle are precisely set up. These systems are very fast and accurate, but of course you need to take your saw, or at least the chain, into your local saw sharpening shop.

The simplest, and in many cases the most practical sharpening tool is a simple hand held round file. You can also add a file guide and depth gauge guide to assist you. Consistency is the key to a sharp chain. The same number of strokes on every tooth, and the exact same direction of every stroke will lead to an extremely sharp chain saw.

There are several types of hand file guides. The simplest type attaches to the round file and allows you to watch the markings on the guide so that you maintain a consistent angle every time you stroke the file. Another type of file guide clamps to the bar and controls the movement of the round file over the teeth of the chain.

The round file needs to match the size of your chain. Most common chain saws should be sharpened with either 7/32 inch or 5/16 inch files. Most round files will last forever if you take care of them properly. Wrap them up before dropping them into your toolbox, and don't use them for picking stones out of the logs.

You can pick up a good depth gauge at most hardware stores. This gauge should be set on top of the chain and used to control how much you need to remove from the guides after each sharpening. After several sharpenings the teeth on your chain will be lower than the guides. You need to take the guide height down to match the height of the teeth on your chain saw.

Power Tool Buying Guide For Saw Blades

The first thing to remember when buying a saw blade is the arbor size. The arbor is the center hole in the blade and that must match the arbor size of the saw. On any saw remember to read your owners manually to see what blade size you will need for your saw. Saw blades come in a variety of sizes, types and materials.

Saws Tools

Type of Materials used to make blades:

Saws Tools

Steel Blades - Good for cutting softwoods, but will dull very quickly on hardwood. Inexpensive.

High-Speed Steel (HSS) Blades - Harder than the steel blades and will stay sharp longer. A little more pricey.

Carbide Tipped Blades - More expensive than the Steel and HSS, but they stay sharp longer than both. Good for hardwood cuts.

Abrasive Blades - Abrasive material used on these blades for cutting masonry and metals.

Diamond Blades - The tips of the blades have real diamonds and will cut through glass, concrete and ceramic tile.

The saw blade does the cutting. Spend a couple dollars more and invest in a blade that will stay sharp longer and give you a better cut.

Types of Blades

Gullet is the space between the teeth of the blade

Ripping - A ripping blade has few teeth and a large gullet for good wood removal. Used for cutting with the grain of the wood and will produce a ruff cut.

Crosscutting - Has many teeth, usually more than 48 and a very small gullet. This is used to cut across the wood grain and will produce a smooth finish.

Combination - Usually has a series of four to five teeth similar to the crosscut and is divided by a very large gullet Used for cutting with the grain, against the grain and miter cuts.

Plywood - Usually has a 100 or more teeth and as the name implies is used for cutting plywood.

Hollow Ground - This blade is ground thinner into the body than the teeth to prevent binding. Used for making smooth cuts across the wood grain.

Dado - This is manufactured as stacked, one piece or two piece adjustable units. Used for cutting grooves and dados in dimensional lumber and sheets.

Thin Kerf - Used for easy cutting and will not waste as much material. This is used for cutting dimensional lumber.

Abrasive - Used for cutting tile, masonry or even steel.

Diamond - Very sturdy and strong blade used for cutting tile, concrete, glass and ceramic materials.

Table Saws Are Great Tools To Have

Saws are a basic building tool that are involved in just about every building project in some way or another. Knowing a little bit about them can be very helpful. Even though most saws look alike, they can be quite different. Yes they all create straight cuts in boards, but some saws are much better than others. The type of saw you use depends on the type of wood and what type of cuts you will be making. For example, if you are cutting plywood and 2x4s for framing, a tale saw can be used. However, if you are looking for a saw that will allow you to complete intricate scroll work, a scroll saw is in order. Both types of these saws will be in a table top or bench top style, but the handles will be completely different. As will the jobs that they perform.

Saws Tools

Table saws have a certain make up to them. The initial part of a table saw is the table itself. The platform or cutting edge can come in various sizes and heights. For bigger workshops, a floor model has the surface that is idea for control when cutting straight edges. A littler table will let the saw fit into tinier shops as well as make it more transportable. The particular handle or arm on the saw will be the determining factor of the type of cuts that are made. The tilt of the saw will serve well for mitre cuts and angles trims.

Saws Tools

Table saw blades are interchangeable. The teeth can be rough or fine and the best blade for the job depends a lot on the type of wood that is being cut and any other material you will be cutting. For example, when cutting brick or stone, water and ceramic tile blades are necessary.

The fence is integral in using the table saw. A sturdy fence will keep the fence from letting the wood slip out of place. It also takes some of the pressure off of the user. The fence will help ensure a better cut than manual holding of the wood will.

The motor of table saws is below the table. It is the guiding light of the table saw. Depending on the amount of horsepower that it has, the table saw will cut lumber piece after lumber piece for many years to come.

So how do you pick table saws that will stand the test of time and give you great quality cuts for many years? Read table saw reviews that are submitted to manufacturers or by industry publications. However, the most extensive reviews will be the ones that were not solicited. Look through online blogs and read what users have to say about table saws.

Tools - A Sea Of Saws

If you look up the definition of the verb "saw" in the dictionary you will find that it means to cut or divide with a saw, to produce or shape with a saw or to make a back and forth motion. If you look up the definition of the noun saw in the dictionary you will find that it says that a saw is any of a variety of tools, either hand operated or power driven, having a thin metal blade or disk, with a sharp, usually toothed edge, used for cutting wood, metal or other hard materials.

Saws Tools

That about says it. And from these simple definitions we have more saws than rabbits have little rabbits. We're going to take a look at just a few of the types of saws and what they are generally used for.

Saws Tools

Just starting off with a simple hack saw, you have more types of these alone than you can possibly imagine.

A hacksaw is your basic hand saw used mostly for cutting metal. Some have pistol grips which make the hacksaw easy to grip. Hacksaws cut in straight lines. They have a fine tooth saw blade that is just perfect for cutting hard materials like metal. These types of saws are very small and easy to use. They are about as basic as a saw gets. Yet, there are many types of hacksaws such as the panel hacksaw which eliminates the frame of the standard hacksaw. This makes it so that you can cut through panels of sheet metal. Your basic types of hacksaws are frame, tubular, junior and junior frame. These saws come in all different shapes, sizes and blade types.

While a hacksaw is a type of hand held saw, there are other types as well.

There is of course the ever popular crosscut saw. The crosscut saw is actually the type of saw that most people think of when they think of a hand held saw. These saws are usually about two feet in length. The teeth of a crosscut saw will always have a negative rake angle. These saws are typically used for cutting through wood. Got a two by four that needs about 6 inches cut off? A crosscut saw will do the job perfectly.

Then you have your panel saw. These are usually smaller versions of crosscut saws. They're usually about a foot and a half long. They typically have more teeth per square inch than a regular crosscut saw. Panel saws are sometimes called box saws because they are good for making boxes and also fit very easily in tool boxes.

Another variation on the crosscut saw is the rip saw. Rip saws have the same basic shape and size as crosscut saws. They usually have much coarser teeth than a crosscut saw and usually have a zero degree rake angle.

Another popular hand saw is the backsaw. This is a square saw with a rigid piece running along the back of the blade. This piece provides extra stiffness to the blade, which allows for nice straight cuts, but also limits the size of the saw. Backsaws are great for cutting joinery.

These are just a few of the saws available to us and we haven't even scratched the surface of the number of handheld saws and haven't even touched power saws.

Yes, there certainly is a sea of saws in the world

Woodworker's Best Tool - The Table Saw

As oven is to a baker, so is the table saw to a wood worker. There can be no wood working operation unless there is an efficient and good sawing machine in the workshop. Wood cutting operation has been going on since time immemorial. Earlier it was done by using axes and other hand held saws. But with the changing times, technology also altered and innovative ideas set ground for the modern day table sawing machines.

Saws Tools

Earlier the whole operation was done manually and proved to be quite a tedious task. But the invention of electricity and the subsequent technological advancements lead to the introduction of the motor run saws. These tools use electricity to operate. This has also lent a push to the production lines too. More is achieved in comparatively lesser time.

Saws Tools

There are mainly three types of saws which are in wide use. The bench top table saw is the most basic kind of an instrument placed on the table. These kinds of saws are light weight and are designed to be carried by a single individual for work. The bench top saws are the least expensive of the trio and are also the smallest in size.

The contractor table saw is slightly heavier and bulkier than the hand held one. It is the common choice of contractors who have a sawing table at the construction site. It is also preferred by the more space conscious workers and definitely has a lot less energy consumption.

Cabinet table saws are the heaviest among all types of ripping instruments. They have a cabinet shaped base and are run on electricity. These kinds of saws are the most efficient and in much demand.

There is another kind of table saw which is a fine mix of all the above featured saws and that is why it is called the hybrid table saw. It is a mainly a mix of the contractor and the cabinet table saws. This kind of saw provides a large working surface, has a powerful base and is accurate.

There are multiple brands in the market which manufacture and promote the sawing instruments. Some of the well established brands are Hitachi, Bosch, Makita and Ryobi which have a complete range of table saws and the various accessories needed for wood work and carpentry.

Even though wood work has become highly mechanized and the sawing equipments have their own safety measure, yet it is advisable to follow some safety rules while working on the saw. Any accident on the work place can prove fatal if proper care and precaution is not taken. Some of the basic rules which need to be followed while working with the wood can be enumerated as follows:

• Compulsory use of safety glasses or a face shield while working
• Use a sharp blade while working with wood as it will lessen the friction
• Ensure safety guards are in proper place
• Do not push the wood with hands in the same line as of the blade
• Stand to one side in case of kickback
• Keep the area around the saw uncluttered
• Unplug the device when not in use

If all the above things are taken into consideration and all the rules followed strictly, wood working can become a delightful and hassle free activity with positive results.

The Metal Cut Off Saw And Band Saw Blades For Tool And Die Making

Every tool and die, precision machining, aerospace and injection mold making shop has at least on metal cut of saw that uses special band saw blades. This is because almost all components start out as part of a bar stock that must be sawed off in order to proceed to the next step. This procedure is more important than often realized. Because it is such a common and inexact operation, it is taken for granted. Many hours of machining could be saved by using a more precise sawing operation, simply because there is less stock to mill and square up.

Saws Tools

The typical scissor type machine is difficult to line up over the line to cut and thus most toolmakers act conservatively and leave more than enough stock. After all, it is much easier to take it off than put it back on! Band saws that use parallel posts to guide the blade have the advantage of facilitating accurate alignment of the saw over the workpiece. It is possible to cut very close to the finished dimension, while producing a straight cut.

Saws Tools

Accurate cuts save a lot of time is the machining to square up the component. This accuracy also makes the stock removal cutting much quicker. This in turn saves the carbide cutters or indexable inserts used. It follows that the high speed spindle experiences a lighter work load, which prolongs its service life.

Another savings is in the number of pieces that can be cut from a single bar of tool steel Metal, such as PX-5, NAK-80, D-2 and Beryllium Copper are rather expensive and any material saved is money saved. Some tool shops use carbide tipped cut off saws for this initial operation. This is very efficient, as long as the volume is rather low. Many mold making shops do not use that many core and cavity blocks, and this is a very good way to cut off the stock.

Larger shops benefit from a more automated cut off operation, with automatically fed bar stock, cut off machining, and on-off switching. Steel suppliers use these for their high volume of steel blocks sent to their customers.

The vertical band saw also is used a great deal in precision machine shops. Not so many years ago, almost all through pockets in mold bases were drilled in the four corners of the pocket, then band sawed to remove the bulk of the steel. Then the pockets were milled in a manual machine, such as a Bridgeport.

Thankfully, those days are long gone and now these same pockets are Wire EDM'd or cut on a CNC milling machine. There are many horizontal, universal and vertical CNC machines capable of cutting pockets in the mold bases.
